This mural is located at Bartlett Regional Hospital’s new detox unit at the Rainforest Recovery Center. The background colors are a blend of a calming light blue green fading into a deeper marine green. Mossy river rocks, river grass, fallen branches and logs are depicted along the wall. Salmon and Dolly Varden trout are interwoven in with small fly fishing flies. Positive affirmations line the bottom of the piece with phrases such as “recovery is possible” and “I matter.”
The piece provides a calming sense of being on the river and will hopefully soothe those going through drug detox.

The color palette of this piece is compromised of entirely contrasting colors, red and green. It represents the journey of spawning sockeye and the change in which their bodies undergo. Patches of mold and decay are detailed on the noses of the salmon. The green river bottom is detailed with red salmon eggs.

This riverscape consists of three bright reddish orange sockeye salmon, making their journey upriver to spawn and die. Embedded in the deep green rocks are salmon eggs. Branches with moss surround the salmon and add depth to the piece. The contrast of the dark reds and oranges against the green add a pop to the piece.

On a sunny day in July, I brought my painting supplies to the North Douglas boat launch and parked myself on the bench facing the water and the mendenhall. I began and finished this piece in one sitting, on the bench. I attemped to capture the movement of the ocean and the flow of the ice from the top of the mountains to the formation of the glacier.
